Most managers want to be good, if not great.

Sensible, up to date, 21st century managers know they get things done through their staff and it is their job to marshal their forces as best they can.

In these tougher times this is so much more essential.

Even here in Australia where there are cutbacks, job losses and money is becoming harder to find, let alone spend, good managers will win over lesser managers. Some businesses will thrive, thanks to their managers.

And, conversely, some managers will dig their heels in. Increase their “command and control” style and “demand” more from their staff - even as they award themselves greater salaries and benefits (oops, did I say that?) Bring on the AGMs! :)

Ok, cynicism will end now but, in some regard, cynicism is warranted!

Why?

Because the basic elements to managing people is relatively easy and reasonably obvious. Yet it isn’t done on many levels. I know I struggle to hit 100% on all things every day.

The Gallup Organisation has surveyed, studied and researched what make a good manager. We should be thanking them for condensing this into one small book that is available to everyone.

Well, we do thank them but, as you read through the 12 Elements, isn’t this stuff blindingly obvious?

If you hit their website (the Gallup Organisation’s) you’ll find the 12 Elements are there for all to see. I suggest anyone, manager or staff member, writes them down and follows the process outlined below, just to get you started.

Managers

  1. write down the 12 elements in list form
  2. mark yourself on how well you do each one
  3. then, ask 3 team members to mark their impression of how you do
  4. compare results
  5. either: create a plan to improve based on the gaps, or
  6. ask staff for suggestions on how to improve
  7. implement
  8. review after 3 months

Team Members

  1. write down the 12 elements in list form
  2. determine which ones are a higher priority
  3. think of ways you could help raise the performance for the top 3
  4. develop a plan to implement to assist your manager

Managers & Team Members

After completing these activities enjoy the fruits of your labours! :)
